Leeds Trinity University’s history dates back to the early 1960s when the two original Catholic teacher training colleges were founded in Leeds: Trinity College for women and All Saints College for men.
The original building work was completed at about the same time as England were winning the World Cup. The two colleges opened in September 1966 and merged to become Leeds Trinity & All Saints in 1980. In 2012 the institution was granted full university status and became Leeds Trinity University.
Course Variety
Leeds Trinity was founded as a teacher training college, and whilst the Institution continues to be renowned for the high standard of its teacher training, provision has expanded and diversified to include thriving departments of Media, Film and Culture; Journalism; Business, Management and Marketing; Psychology; Sport, Health and Nutrition. Leeds Trinity continues to develop its courses and was one of the first places in the UK to offer degrees in Forensic Psychology and Sports Journalism.Continued Growth
The 1980s were a crucial decade for the Institution. The two original colleges merged, surviving the previous ten years in which all education colleges had come under a lot of pressure. The Institution adapted and introduced new, non-vocational courses. In the 1990s a course in Journalism was offered. Subsequently the Institution’s growth was accelerated, and there are now more than 3,000 students, ten times more than when the Institution was opened in 1966 (approximately 300).
In spite of expansion, Leeds Trinity has retained the community feel that makes it so special. The campus continues to develop, too, with various improvements being made to improve the great community including All Saints Court (198 bedrooms with ensuite and self-catered facilities worth built for £6m in September 2010) and the 3G Astroturf Pitch (opened in September 2012).
Our Catholic Identity
Leeds Trinity has a strong Catholic foundation and the chapel has always been a ‘hub’ of the campus. As an inclusive community, Leeds Trinity seeks to help all who live and work here to flourish.
